LAB-019 / Offline GPX companion / Building

What's Ahead

Load a GPX route, save the water, food, stores and campsites along it, and see what is coming up on your ride. Works offline.

Why I built it

On a long ride the question is rarely “where is the nearest store?” It is “what is the next one on my route, how far is it, and how much climbing is in the way?” Map search answers the first question. This answers the second.

Current development

Load a GPX route, download water, food, stores and campsites along it from OpenStreetMap while you have signal, then ride with no data. The list shows what is coming up, its distance along the route, how far off route it sits, and the climb to reach it. Built first for the Schuylkill Scramble routes, in the Scramble design system.

What remains open

Tested with unit tests and a phone-size browser run using synthetic places and simulated GPS. The first real OpenStreetMap download and on-bike GPS use still need verification. Place hours and details come from OpenStreetMap and can be out of date.

Hypothesis

Can a route-aware list of what’s ahead replace stopping to search a map on a long ride?

Watch whether riders on a Scramble route find their next water or food stop without opening a map app. Status: open.
